“The cobbler’s son has no shoes.”
That’s the common struggle corporate communications professionals (and PR, marketing, internal comms, etc.) face. They’re so busy making their companies and their bosses look good, they forget about themselves.
If you fit that description, my message to you is: Stop neglecting yourself! Tell your stories. Share your experiences. Make your voice heard.
Not convinced? Here are 3 Reasons to be active and accessible online.
Create Opportunities for Yourself
When you build your personal brand, people notice you (duh).
That visibility and attention creates opportunities. For promotion. For new roles. For collaboration. For your department and your company.
Help People
Inspiration is highly underrated.
When you share stories about mistakes you made, challenges you’ve overcome, lessons you’ve learned, you can inspire a generation of people coming up behind you. It’s like being a mentor at scale, and it can elevate you and your profession.
Set an Example
If your company's executives and leaders are not building their brands and telling stories, they're missing the opportunity to build trust with employees, customers, and stakeholders.
But if you do it yourself and are able to demonstrate success, then maybe your company’s leaders will see it and see what’s possible.
I know how hard communications professionals work, and the struggles you deal with. Because I’ve been there.
You have a lot to offer the world. You’re helping your company and your leaders look good. Don’t forget about yourself.
