If you work in communications, PR, marketing, internal communications, or other communications fields, I’m talking to you.
You’re too selfless!
You love helping your bosses and companies tell their stories, but too many of you neglect their own. I know because I’m the same way.
This is a shame for three reasons.
First, because communicators have stories, ideas and experiences that are just as valuable as anyone else’s.
Second, because they’re good at writing and storytelling, and thus can craft their stories for maximum impact.
Third, because the more they tell their own stories, the better they’ll get at telling their bosses’ stories.
So I’m here to encourage you to tell your stories!
You Can Make an Impact
Like any other executive, you as a communications pro can make an impact on people through their stories.
You can inspire others to be the best they can be. You can elevate the profession and make sure its practitioners are setting the best examples. You can build relationships with current and future employees. And employers.
- My recommendations for you are the same as it is for any executive:
- Celebrate your team members for being good at what they do, and for just being themselves.
- Tell your stories about mistakes made, lessons learned, and victories won.
- Give advice and insights to your peers in communications.
- Share your thoughts on topics that are important to you.
- Let your audience get to know your on a personal level (as much as you’re comfortable).
And be consistent. Carve out time to be accessible on platforms like LinkedIn at least once a week.
You Owe Yourself
I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know. My goal is simply to encourage you to put yourself first, at least for a few minutes every day.
In doing so, you will build your personal brand and unlock opportunities for you and your team.
You will also reinforce your company’s brand. More people – employees, prospective employees, customers, stakeholders – will see the kind of smart, forward-thinking people your company hires, and will want to be part of their story.
So if you work in any communications field, my message to you is this.
You’re working hard to make your company and its leaders look good. You owe yourself the same thing!
I’ve worked with people just like you to help them tell their stories. So if you need help, I invite you to set up a 15-minute, no-strings-attached intro call.
